Abstract

This article is a review of a seminal contribution to the understanding of the female-to-male (FTM) transsexual. Becoming a Visible Man was written by a pioneer in the FTM community. He recounts his own personal story while documenting the historical events in the development of the FTM community. In addition, he provides information about the social and medical aspects of the transition process for the FTM person, and a discussion of the interpersonal and ethical issues confronting the transman, his family members, and the therapist who seeks to help them all. He includes a discussion of the contrast between the treatment of transgender children and that of intersex children. RESOURCE REVIEWED: BECOMING A VISIBLE MAN, Green, Jamison. Nashville: Vanderbilt University Press, 2004, 231 pp., $24.95, ISBN0-8265-1457-X.
