Abstract
Abstract This review constitutes the first section of a manual summarising the problems in banana production caused by diseases, and mineral deficiencies. Available control measures are recorded. For each pathogen there is given a description of its distribution, symptoms, occurrence and control measures, including phytosanitation and the use of appropriate fungicides or nematocides. The pathogens dealt with are leaf spot (Mycosphaerella musicola), Panama disease (Fusarium oxysporum), Bonnygate disease (Calostilbe striispora), bacterial head rot (Erwinia musae), bacterial wilt (Pseudomonas solanacearum); stalk rot: (Botryodiplodia theobromae, Ceratocystis paradoxa, Gloesporium musarum); fruit rots: (Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, Trachysphaera fructigena, Verticillium. spp., Deightoniella forulosa, Hendersonula toruloidea, Pyricularia grisea); virus diseases; nematodes (Pratylenchulus goodeyi, P. coffeae, Radopholus similis, Meloidogyne spp., Helicotylenchus a fricanus); mineral deficiencies - nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, iron, and magnesium.
