Abstract

Even though the earliest automatic essay scoring (AES) research and piloting dates back to the 1960s, the past 10 years have witnessed a surge in the research and development of computer scoring of essays, formally known as AES. During the past 5 years, AES has been increasingly accepted as a viable means of scoring essays. Examples of today's large-scale AES applications include Write America by PEG, the PSSA Writing Assessment of Pennsylvania by Intellimetric', writing practices for Test of English as a Foreign Language by E-rater?, and the Graduate Equivalency Diploma by Intelligent Essay Assessor'. The arrival of this book could not be timelier because it serves as a centralized source of authoritative knowledge and testimony to help educators gain a better understanding of how AES works.
