Abstract

The native horse heart ferricytochrome c molecule is less compact than ferrocytochrome c and more readily undergoes alcohol induced disruption of the heme crevice. Carboxymethylation of methionine 80 of cytochrome c reverses the relative strengths of the heme crevice and the susceptibility to alcohol induced conformational changes. An explanation for this dramatic change is suggested.
