Abstract

This paper describes how family therapy was used by an Asian social worker in working with an Asian family who believes and practices Buddhism. The family came to treatment concerned about their 7-year-old son who was experiencing school refusal, night terrors, and increasing “hyperactivity.” Since the family perceived the origin of these problems to be spiritual, the author gave special attention to the family's spiritual beliefs in order to join with them and work within their worldview. This paper discusses the case in detail and also illustrates how there can be a meeting of eastern and western worldviews when family therapy is translated into culturally relevant practice.
