Abstract

Background: Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is an invasive endoscopic technique with potentially high morbidity including post ERCP pancreatitis. There are patient and procedure related factors associated with the risk of these complications. Among procedure related factors, selective cannulation of common bile duct (CBD) by insertion of a soft-tipped Teflon tracer guidewire (ERCPw) may be associated with fewer complications than conventional methods of cannulation (ERCPc) using contrast injection for accessing the CBD.
