Abstract

Perttula and Cast (2011) have questioned continued use of the term Caddoan in respect to mound building societies in eastern Oklahoma arguing that the term Caddo is more appropriate. I have responded briefly to the issues they raise. The points I address include: differences in the knowledge base for eastern Oklahoma and the three-corners area of Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas; the problem with the use of a single tribe cultural affiliation where there is limited historical context; and the need for a bigger stage for such a discussion.
