Abstract
The strong impetus towards disarmament, resulting from the ending of the cold war, has confronted military-industrial firms with difficult problems of adjustment. Factors affecting the success or failure of diversification and conversion, through internally-generated development of civilian products, are explored, together with a model for understanding the dynamics of industrial change. Experience to date suggests that the prospects for success will be significantly affected by government policy.
