Abstract

The paper describes a theoretical treatment that has been carried out to stud the dynamic behaviour of gas-flow in the intake manifold of a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine, whose performance is improved by inertia charging effect. The analysis is based on the characteristic method which is applicable to a one-dimensional flow. The configuration of intake manifold is made so complicated in order to utilize the inertia charging effect that the existence of a real one- dimensional flow can not be expected in the manifold. However, the results of calculation for the volumetric efficiency and pressure variations agree pretty well with the experimental ones. It seems that the characteristic method can be used to design the optimum intake manifold of a multi-cylinder engines. Furthermore, some items concerning the dimensions of engine and manifold are described in order to utilize the inertia charging effect positively.
