Abstract

The current volume on future research agendas of civil society is a first in its kind. The methodology to approach authors and to discuss initial ideas was therefore slightly different from what is usually undertaken. Helped by the necessity of organizing webinars during the pandemic lockdowns, it was possible to gather a multitude of experts on civil society research from all corners of the world to explore their ideas on civil society research themes and their disposition to contribute to this volume. This introductory chapter to the volume details this approach and then provides a brief overview of main authors, works and topics in civil society research of the past four decades. In a way, this civil society research 'canon' provides a fertile basis from which new and necessary future research themes are distilled. The chapter then provides a brief overview of the composition of the volume.
