Abstract

Laemobothrion maximum are chewing, mallophagan lice that infest raptors. External examination of free-range, rescued dead and live black kites (Milvus migrans) at the People for Animals Wildlife Hospital, Uttarahalli, Bangalore, Karnataka, India, revealed the presence of numerous large sized lice in the feathers which were identified as L. maximum by the prominent features in the head region. Heavy infestations can lead to self-mutilation, irritation, anemia, weight loss and death in birds.
