Abstract
[For over twenty years Jean Hurault has been conducting surveys in the region occupied by Niem-niem, Boute, Wawa, Mambila, Kondja and Tikar-that is, in an area comprising the Mambila plateau, the plain of Tikar and the western Adamawa plateau. The lake which will be created by the new Mape dam has given a special urgency to the work in the Tikar plain where more than forty ancient fortified villages are being submerged. The research has had to be interdisciplinary, combining alongside archaeology the approaches of human geography and cultural anthropology. The most recent results from the study have been published in 'Les anciens peuplements de cultivateurs de l'Adamaoua occidental (CamerounNigeria)', Cahiers ORSTOM, serie Sciences Humaines, 22 (1) 1986; and in 'Fecondite et mortalite dans l'agglomeration urbaine de Banyo (Cameroun): l'incidence des maladies veneriennes', Cahiers ORSTOM, serie Sciences Humaines, 19 (3), 1983, 247--67-EDITOR]
