Abstract

This paper describes a remotely operated inspection cell which is currently being developed for high rise, buildings. In a few of these buildings reinforced concrete has been found to be in an advanced state of decay, and thus the need to operate inspection and monitoring programmes has arisen. Following a brief account of concrete decay and the commonly used inspection and detection methods, the operational requirements for the automation of each inspection element are discussed. A prototype cell, based on the use of a conventional suspended access platform, is described with fuller details given of some elements. In the conclusion, the ongoing research and development strategy is presented, with attention drawn to the key enabling technology areas.
