Abstract
A male gecko from the Horn of Africa's arid-country dwelling Lygodactylus somalicus species group has been found in a Zanzibar ground-water forest. The new species, L. howelli, in spite of distinctive traits such as seven preanal pores, no postnasal and heavily pigmented underside in the male sex, indicates that the group is derived from one species with several north-south clines, of which the present-day superspecies L. (somalicus) somalicus/L.(somalicus) howelli is a remnant.
