Abstract
Observations on the incidence of perennial canker on peach indicated a wide range of susceptibility within the 24 varieties examined. Lineage comparisons revealed also that resistance can be transmitted to offspring by hybridization with such varieties as Elberta, J. H. Hale, Golden Jubilee, Earlyvee and July Queen.Marked differences in the rate of leaf fall were demonstrated for these same varieties, which could be classified as rapid, moderate, and slow in defoliation. Good correlation was established between rate of defoliation and relative susceptibility to perennial canker, with rapid leaf fall indicating moderate resistance. The implications of this correlation to the breeding program by the selection of canker resistant seedlings in hybrid progenies is discussed.
