Abstract
For an ellipsoidal inclusion with uniform eigenstrains in an infinitely extended material, the total strains in the inclusion are given by the well known Eshelby tensor Sijkl. A general relationship S1111+S2222+S3333+2(S1212+S 2323+S3131) = 3 among the components of the Eshelby tensor and its physical meaning are reported. It is shown that the relationship can be extended to an inclusion with any shape in a material with any anisotropic elastic moduli.
