Abstract

Pediatric electrophysiology has evolved into a defined subspecialty of pediatric cardiology requiring advanced specialized training. Intracardiac electrophysiology study and catheter ablation requires the expertise of a pediatric electrophysiologist. The limited electrophysiology volume of many pediatric cardiac centers limits the exposure that is available for a full-time pediatric electrophysiologist. Various strategies have been utilized to provide electrophysiology coverage for the medium and small volume centers including the use of internal medicine trained electrophysiologists performing the ablation or guiding pediatric cardiologists. A novel approach to providing pediatric electrophysiology coverage is the regionalized approach in which a number of centers are serviced by an individual pediatric electrophysiologist. This serves to maximize procedural volume and experience for the pediatric electrophysiologist. The approach requires integration and support from the full-time pediatric cardiologists and staff at each center and is enhanced by emerging technologies used for data transfer.
