Abstract

As is the case with many Renaissance cathedral musicians, little is known about the life of Pedro Fern?ndez de Castilleja except what is mentioned about him in cathedral chapter records. The first known reference to Fern?ndez in the Actas capitulares of Seville Cathedral concerns his appointment as maestro de cape lia there on August 13, 1514.1 Since no secure references to him survive in Court documents or in other sources, his career before this time?by what means Fern?ndez made a name for himself as a musician, and how he came to the Cathedral?is a mystery.2 That Fern?ndez inhabited a rich, thriving musical environment, and held a key position in the city of Seville for most of his life can be stated with certainty.
