Abstract

Pagothenia antarctica is determined to be a valid genus and species. The genus is characterized by the absence of an upper lateral line and the peculiar condition of the cephalic lateral line canals. The fenestra of the pectoral girdle is enclosed by the scapula. The genus is most similar to Pleuragramma Boulenger, but Trematomus borchgrevinki also shows several striking similarities to Pagothenia and perhaps should be removed from Trematomus. Trematomus bernacchii and T. hansoni show certain similarities with Pagothenia, but these vary within the species.
