Abstract

In previous chapters we simplified our discussion of political values in post-communist societies by grouping answers to many specific questions under four broad headings: socialism, nationalism, liberal values, and popular control. Within these broad categories we grouped questions under 15 sub-headings ranging, for example, from ‘state control of industry’ to ‘tolerance’ and ‘populism’. That hierarchy of headings and subheadings was intended to reflect both the perspectives of political theory and the debates in contemporary politics within postcommunist Europe.
