Abstract

Monodon baculovirus (MBV) exists in populations of the Indian tiger prawn, Penaeus monodon, obtained from a commercial hatchery in Madras, India. MBV virions are rod-shaped, non-occluded or occluded and enveloped within a paracrystalline occlusion body. The enveloped virions measure 83 nm by 299 ± 0.02 nm. The prevalence of MBV was 81% in the postlarval P. monodon and peaking at 92% with a carapace length of 6 mm. The mortality rate in infected populations of P. monodon was 90%.
