Abstract

This paper presents a reconfigurable 4G MIMO mobile handset antenna that covers the eight frequency bands of LTE-A standard (LTE700/GSM850/GSM900/DCS/PCS/UMTSI LTE2300/LTE2500). This two elements MIMO antenna system consists of an improved PIFA and monopole, good isolation between two elements in the entire working frequency bands is achieved. The monopole works as the main antenna that covers the entire working frequency bands simultaneously, the PIFA covers the high frequency bands(1710-2690MHz), and the working frequency in the low frequency bands(698-960MHz) depends on the length of the liquid metal strip. The theory of characteristic mode is used to analyze the properties of antenna, and we explain the reasons of high isolation between two elements by modal currents. The volume of substrate is $120\times 60\times 0.8\text{mm}^{3}$, the monopole and the PIFA occupy $15\times \text{mm}$ and $\mathbf{20\times 60 \mathbf{mm}^2}$ respectively.
