Abstract

This work aims to evaluate the behavior of the distribution of household income per capita (RDPC) in Brazil from 2004 to 2012. As complementary objectives were sought: exposing the existing debate in the recent literature on income distribution in Brazil; determine the immediate causes of any differences in the distribution of the RDPC based on the degree of progressivity of the income shares; analyze the composition effect and the effect of varying the concentration-Gini index of portions of the RDPC from 2004 to 2012 to achieve these goals was used as a methodology, the calculation of the Gini Indices, Mehran and Piesch and their decompositions considering income shares. As database microdata from the National Survey by Household Sampling (PNAD) for the study period was used. Results showed that the most significant part in the formation of Brazilian income was compensation of employees in the private sector. Besides this, the plots that stood out due to the increase of their participation in the formation of the RDPC were: pensions and other income, including from social programs and family allowance.
