Abstract

Synopsis Examination of the published records and museum specimens of the mollusca from Scott and Steel's (1883) Late-glacial ‘arctic bed’ locality at Garvel Park, Greenock, confirms the cold water aspect of the fauna and suggests that it can be compared with that of shallow water communities in mid- to high-arctic regions today. It also supports the view that oceanic waters on the coast of western Scotland were arctic for at least part of the Loch Lomond interval. Four species are added to the faunal list, of which Buccinum terraenovae Beck and Nicania striata Leach are new to the Scottish Late-glacial marine fauna.
