Abstract

ABSTRACT This paper suggests that for the Chinese to play their economic roles effectively in Singapore, they not only need to preserve their Chineseness, but also must adapt to specific historical, social, cultural and political factors. In some instances, that “Chineseness” may have to be selectively de-emphasized as the entrepreneur has to operate within the Chinese community as well as with the indigenous population. More attention must also be given to the entrepreneurial characteristics which were critical to the success of their business ventures. To have a more comprehensive picture of a Chinese entrepreneur in Singapore, it is evident then that the focus must not be too narrow. Apart from considering Chinese heritage, attention must also be given to entrepreneurial qualities and the historical context in which the business developed.
