Abstract

Network traffic monitoring is critical for wireless applications to ensure the QoS while streaming multimedia content. The high rate of traffic monitoring is likely to obtain the high accuracy of the network traffic. However, using a high monitoring rate has a tradeoff due to the extra bandwidth consumption. In a wireless network environment with limited bandwidth, traffic load generated by a high monitoring rate may cause the network congestion. Therefore, both accuracy and bandwidth consumption should be taken into consideration while determining an appropriate traffic monitoring rate. In this paper, an adaptive real-time traffic monitoring approach that can dynamically adjusts the monitoring rate based on real-time network bandwidth consumption and network congestion status is proposed. In the serious traffic condition, the system uses a small traffic monitoring rate in order to avoid increasing network traffic load. If the network traffic is steady, the rate is reduced. When the traffic is fluctuated, the rate is increased to detect variations in the network.
