Abstract

Turing the past six years a network of computers has been built for the automatic handling of information regarding a production section reaching from blast furnaces to slabbing mills. In this section liquid pig iron produced by the blast furnaces is converted to ingots (blocks of steel) ready for rolling in the mills. This production section is called the “steel sector”. To control the production in this sector an enormous amount of information handling (collection, processing, communicating, displaying, reporting) is required. To improve the effectiviness and quality of this informationhandling with decreasing labor costs an automatic informationsystem has been built. History, design, implementation, results obtained and possible future developments concerning this project will be described.
