Abstract

1. 1. The distribution of the two glyoxalases (glyoxalase I EC 4.4.1.5 and glyoxalase II EC 3.1.2.6) in a number of human and animal tissues was determined. The most active sources of glyoxalase I were found to be ox and mouse (DBA 2 strain) livers, and of glyoxalase II—chick kidney and ox liver. 2. 2. The glyoxalases are present in all of the normal tissues examined except human spleen, mouse heart and rat muscle. 3. 3. In majority of cancer tissues and cells glyoxalase I activity was lower than in normal tissues. while glyoxalase II activity is not detectable or is very small. 4. 4. A comparison was made between activity of the glycoxalases determined by the spectrophotometric method, and the activity of the glyoxalase system estimated by the colorimetric and manometric methods formerly used for this purpose. It was found that those three methods gave completely different results.
