The frequency with which a single liver biopsy demonstrates metastatic cancer in patients proved to have hepatic metastases has been reported to range from 66 (3) to 91 per cent (2) and averages 71 per cent (Table 1). These studies, in which most of the patients have shown obvious signs of metastatic disease of the liver, may have exaggerated its true value.
