Abstract

Physical chemistry is usually regarded as the single most difficult course in the normal undergraduate chemistry curriculum. Its requirement of learning based on physics and calculus can be a very daunting one. Through the inclusion of symbolic mathematics (e.g., Maple, Mathematica, Macsyma, MathCad, and Derive) students' learning can be enhanced, while providing them with a useful tool and technique of reading and verifying. A set of examples that illustrate the power of these symbolic mathematical manipulation programs is provided.
