Abstract
E arly in 2006 I encountered an unusual biznaga growing on lands of the Masiaca Indigenous Community in southern Sonora. A comunero (member of the community) from the village of Bachomojaqui, less than a kilometer from the Gulf of California, mentioned that he had come across a most unusual biznaga not far from his village, and he was quite willing to lead me to it. He was right about it’s being unusual: twenty-five heads branch from the apex to form a ring around the main trunk, an arrangement the Mayos say they have not seen elsewhere. They estimate its weight at more than 200 kg: large, but Ferocactus herrerae DAVID YETMAN
