Abstract

Ehrlichiosis is a bacterial disease that affects dogs in Brazil. This paper has aimed to report a clinical case of infection by Ehrlichia canis in a dog in southern Brazil. The animal showed apathy, anemia, thrombocytopenia, alteration of leukogram, and bleeding. In blood smears, morulae of E. canis within leukocytes (neutrophils) were observed. The confirmation of the clinical and parasitological diagnosis was made by positive serology to E. canis (1:1024). Canine ehrlichiosis has rarely been diagnosed in southern Brazil, in which this is the first clinical case reported in the Rio Grande do Sul state.
