Abstract

In adults, a congenital transmesenteric hernia is a rare cause of obstruction of the small bowel. It should be considered in the differential diagnosis in adults presenting with intestinal obstruction without any obvious external hernia or trauma or past abdominal surgery. We present a 55-year-old woman who had severe upper abdominal pain. On laparotomy, a mesenteric defect in sigmoid mesocolon with herniated necrotic ileum was found. The gangrenous small bowel was resected and the defect in mesentery was repaired.
