Abstract

Histamine H3-agonists caused a dose-dependent inhibition of both cholinergic and nonadrenergic noncholinergic (NANC) responses of isolated guinea-pig ileum preparations (pD2±S.D. of histamine, 7.3±0.1; Nα-methylhistamine, 8.4±0.2 and (R)α-methylhistamine, 8.3±0.2); H3-antagonists blocked this inhibition (pA2 of impromidine, 7.2±0.2 and thioperamide, 8.5±0.2). Our results indicate the presence of H3-receptors on both cholinergic and NANC nerves in the myenteric plexus and offer a rapid and simple test-system for the histamine H3-receptor.
