Abstract

Several evaluations of treatments for the arm after stroke have found benefits (Feys et al, 1988; Turton and Fraser, 1990; Sunderland et al , 1992). However, it is unclear whether intensity or modality of treatment are responsible for effects. This single blind randomised controlled trial evaluated effects of early additional physiotherapy for the upper limb. The treatment approach aimed to reflect usual British practice. Outcome was compared between additional and routine physiotherapy and between treatment given by a qualified physiotherapist and treatment given by a trained, supervised assistant.
