Abstract

Abstract Low-frequency (≤ 350 cm−1) Raman spectra of (CH3NH3)5Bi2Cl11 single crystals have been studied as a function of temperature between 60 and 330 K. The temperature behaviour of the stretching mode frequencies of the (Bi2Cl11)5− anion shows that a second-order ferroparaelectric phase transition occurs at about 305 K. The transition is not accompanied by any mode softening, thus indicating its order-disorder nature. Ordering of the methylammonium cation below TC exerts a strong influence on the (Bi2Cl11)5− anion. No evidence of the ferroferroelectric phase transition, which was reported1 to occur at 170 K, was found.
