Abstract
The effects of potassium pentachlorophenate (KPCP) on carbohydrate metabolism in the fish (Cichlasoma bimaculatum) were studied using radiorespirometry. Analysis of the patterns of radiolabeled carbon dioxide (14CO2) recovery from fish exposed to 0, 0.2, and 1.5 ppm of KPCP and metabolizing specifically labeled carbon-14 (14C)-glucose and acetate indicated that this species of fish uses the Embden-Meyerhoff-Parnas (EMP), pentose phosphate (PP), and glucuronic acid (GA) pathways in conjunction with the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle for metabolizing carbohydrates. The KPCP stimulated the EMP pathway and the TCA cycle and presumably reduced the utilization of the PP and GA pathways.
