Abstract

A description is given of the development of an rf mass analyzer-tube which can be employed for use as Bennett type aperiodic rf mass analyzer, as a time-of-flight mass spectrometer, as a time-of-flight mass spectrometer with parabolic path, as a Redhead type rf mass spectrometer and as a resonance mass selector, after making a slight adjustment of the grids in the analyzer assembly. A novel method of electrode mounting has been achieved. Fine and accurate grids of special configuration with improved micro-optics have been developed for use in the analyzer. This mass analyzer tube provides a most simple and convenient technique for the comparison of performance and operating characteristics of various types of non-magnetic mass analyzers under the same operating conditions.
