Abstract

The researchers are always in search of new methods to assess the impact of new technologies. In crop improvement research, estimation of area under modern varieties not only helps in computing returns to investment in research but also in the selection of parents from among the popular varieties in breeding programs. Different methods of estimation of area under modern varieties were reviewed and the procedure of estimation in the proposed seed distribution method is explained. The estimates of the new method were compared with the estimates of the household survey method. It was found that the mean absolute error between the two methods was only 1.24, which was well below the tolerable limit of 5 percent. Out of the 23 most popular varieties listed in the household method, 21 were found in the seed distribution method. Considering the cost and time efficiency of the seed distribution method in comparison to the household survey method, the new method is recommended for area estimation of modern rice varieties of rice.
