Abstract
Remarkable figure in the nineteenth century’s Brazilian literary and cultural scene, Joaquim Norberto incarnated the romantic spirit and was a model of the public man of his time, consciously cooperating in the construction of the nation and the building of a new society. Thus, in Romances and novels, the Portuguese character almost doesn’t exist. Its presence in «The two orphans» and «The false testament» is strategic or casual, serving merely to justify and affirm the Brazilian nationality, or to denigrate it.

Adensando a intriga e dificultando a concretização do amor entre Margarida e Henrique, o autor concebe, sob um ponto de vista muito crítico, uma personagem portuguesa, central na intriga, que consubstancia um conjunto de defeitos que, estrategicamente, têm por fim denegrir a sua imagem, muito ao sabor da tentativa de apoucar o português, antigo colonizador, uma vez que o romance é escrito num momento de afirmação de nacionalidade e que, quase 40 anos depois, numa outra fase da literatura brasileira, aparecerá em romances de Aluísio Azevedo, como O cortiço, de 1891, nas figuras de João Romão e de Miranda
