Abstract

The formation of thick adsorption-entanglement layers at foreign surfaces during the flow of high molecular weight polymer solutions is now well documented. This paper presents a quantitative model which describes the formation of such layers in terms of the polymer molecular weight and radius of gyration, the solution concentration and the local flow velocity. The model is tested against experiments using capillary flow of atactic polystyrene solutions. The agreement between theory and experiment is very good.
