Abstract

AbstractA sensitive and quantitative assay of parthenolide and other sesquiterpene lactones containing an α‐methylenebutyrolactone residue which are present in Feverfew, Tanacetum parthenium, has been developed. This is based on Michael additions of alkylthiols containing a large chromophore to the latter function. A particularly suitable derivatizing agent is 9‐thiomethylanthracene. The adducts are analysed accurately and with great sensitivity using high performance liquid chromatograph coupled with ultraviolet detection.
