Abstract
An algorithm developed to assist the engineering geologist in the identification and correlation of subsurface units allows descriptive site investigation borehole logs to be evaluated quantitatively. Such boreholes usually have a restricted vertical range and penetrate variable surficial deposits. The routine identifies formations by examining the bulk lithological change of the sequence within individual boreholes. Correlation ties are investigated by examining the distribution of formations across several neighboring boreholes. The routine is an interactive device into which geologically significant variables can be entered, and assists the geologist in gaining an understanding of a particular area. The algorithm was designed primarily for use in the Lower Thames region of England, from which examples demonstrate the principles and methods which have widespread application.
