Abstract

Automated inspection devices are capable of ensuring better quality products, while improving productivity and minimising the overall cost of manufacturing. Coordinate measuring machine (CMM) is one such important automated inspection device used to determine coordinates of points on a workpiece surface using a movable probe. Selection of a suitable CMM for a manufacturing organisation is a complex task as most of the available CMMs are designed to serve a wide array of inspection requirements. Although, the selection of automated inspection devices has been addressed in fewer past studies, most of them have not considered voice of the customers in the decision making process. Hence, this paper proposes a quality function deployment-based model which correlates customers' requirements with technical specifications of the available CMMs. Furthermore, in order to ease out the entire CMM selection procedure, a user friendly software prototype in Visual BASIC 6.0 is developed.
