Abstract
ABSTRACT A description of the design and performance of a quadrant detector for image-stabilization systems is given. A compact design and high sensitivity is achieved by using newly-available avalanche photodiode detectors. This device is in operation on the 3.6-metre Canada-France-Hawaii telescope, and excellent performance is attained using guide stars as faint as magnitude 19.5.
