Abstract

Mechanical activation of quartz grains in a dry atmosphere causes triboelectric charging that can capture CO2 quantitatively (Thøgersen et al., https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cplett.2021.139069). Based on electron structure calculations, we propose a mechanism for this process. According to the mechanism, CO2 is inserted in the quartz lattice to form an anchored CO3 moiety. Predicted 13C chemical shifts of this product agree with solid-state 13C NMR measurements.
