Abstract
Describes a Raman spectrometer employing a pulsed dye laser and a 'gated analogue detection' system covering the visible and near-UV region (down to 360 nm) without the use of frequency doubling. The S/N performance of this apparatus is discussed and some 'test' experimental results are presented. The apparatus is to be preferred to those employing conventional CW lasers when efficient background rejection or low average power is required. Moreover, it is to be preferred to those employing the 'gated photon counting' technique because of a higher S/N ratio capability.
