This is several books in one. It is the fascinating account of "young boy makes good." The story of Porteus pedalling to become the director of a program for mentally defective children; his subsequent researches into brain function and measurement; the development of the Porteus Maze test; and his experiences at Vineland and the Psychological Clinic at Hawaii tell of the history of clinical psychology, in a most readable and interesting fashion. Most exciting is the tale of adventure in the Australian Bush and in South Africa. There is also the vivid account of the disaster at Pearl Harbor and a personalized description of how it affected the residents. Throughout, the development of Stanley D. Porteus is revealed not only as a "psychologist of sorts," but as a breathing individualist of depth and breadth. The wine is mellow and of good vintage. I
