Abstract

Culture filtrates of Phytophthora drechsleri Tucker were lethal to protoplasts isolated from cotyledons of cucumber ( Cucumis sativus L. cv. Straight Eight), probit percentage death being proportional to the reciprocal of the dilution factor expressed logarithmically. This relationship allowed the ready assessment of the median dose (LD 50) which was defined as one unit of activity. When the fungus was grown in a synthetic medium containing glucose and asparagine, titres of toxicity reached maximum values of c. 900 units ml −1 and the dry weight of the fungus c. 3 mg ml −1. In a second synthetic medium containing glucose, ammonium sulphate and fumaric acid, maximum values were >2000 units ml −1 and c. 11 mg ml −1 respectively.
