Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Omega-3 fatty acids (n-3 FA) are involved in ion homeostasis, intracellular signal transduction, mitochondrial energy production and free radical metabolism impacting cell oxidative stress which has been corrrelated with embryo quality. Dietary supplementation with n-3 FA has been shown to improve embryo quality in bovine IVF, but has not been studied in humans. The primary n-3 FA of interest are DHA and EPA. This is a pilot study to determine if n-3 FA are present in human ovarian follicular fluid and are correlated with RBC membrane values.
